Ever heard of the saying bauety is in the eye of the beholder, there is no one size fits all to get a perfect web site design, this is why people do market research. Corporate type sites with lots of information in text would not interest somebody of artistic nature and vice versa... it really depends on your target user.

I would agree with two things that run universal. Colour scheme is very important , and typography too. Obviously content and how it is displayed . Dont make you website busy.

So lets say you design a artistic website with lots of images and facny typography , artistic users wil love it but lets say this website is aimed at small businesses or corporate companies .... you wont do well.

Lets say you design a very tidy website with lots of analytical information an graphs and charts , but your target market is a artists , you wont do well .

It depends on who you are targeting.

Graphic and web design is about designing for your target market first , not for yourself .
