How to plug and play HDD in Windows? How to fix of not recognized any drive?

    Hello,

have you faced the issue that hot-swap HDD was not automatically recognised by Windows operating system after inserted?

Im not talking about external USB drive, but drive thats inserted into Icy-BOX hot swap HDD array.

I went into Managing computer / Storage and tried to find new drives + refresh but it did not worked.

What worked is to insert HDD before computer start.

But here is one more work around. One should enable AHCI.

    1. Startup "Regedit
    2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
    3. Open msahci
    4. In the right field left click on "start" and go to Modify
    5. In the value Data field enter "0" and click "ok"
    6. exit "Regedit"
    7. Reboot Rig and enter BIOS (hold "Delete" key while Booting

In your BIOS select "Integrated Peripherals" and OnChip PATA/SATA Devices. Now change SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE.

You now boot into windows 7, the OS will recognize AHCI and install the devices. Now the system needs one more reboot and voilla .. enjoy the improved SSD performance.

I try this but seems my HDD cable is no longer working or maybe dead. I change port and it works on new port. Don't know what is issue.

ACHI is enabled on my PC by default.

That HDD bay should be connected to the motherboard via a sata cable so it wont be plug and play.

There are some of the newer uefi bios's that support the sata port to be set to plug and play.

First you need to start up your pc in uefi bios while the hdd is connected and then you need to set the sata port to which it is connected to plug and play.

This will depend on what bios you have and which model motherboard you have like asus or gigabyte.

All in all it is a bios setting.
