Top Tips for Commercial and Industrial Electrical Fire Safety

To be safe while working around electricity should be our priority which is what we want you to ponder upon in this month of may being the national electric safety month. Electricity is intertwined with our daily chores, and we always take it for granted and ignore mandatory safety precautions or installations.

Being an Indian manufacturer and service provider of electric safety devices, it is of utmost importance that we are conscientious of upgrading our knowledge and spreading awareness about the latest electric safety technology and code/ standards to be followed. This is crucial as electricity has enough potential to cause death by electrocution, equipment failure, initiating fire hazards, explosions, etc.

This blog shall be specifically related to electric and fire safety tips for electric professionals in the commercial and industrial sector to decrease fire hazards that ruin life and interrupt business sectors.

    1. Keeping Up With the Latest Codes and Standards Is a Challenge: A lightning protection system and surge protection devices with maintenance-free earthing system are recommended for complete electric safety of your structure externally and internally. They must be in compliance with the latest ISO/IEC standards as the best practices are well established and approved by national/ international research organizations based on the evolving technologies.

Codes and practices change as per the safety requirements - some old practices have become obsolete, but some are still in practice. For e.g. a Conventional lightning protection system is still recommended in mandatory safety standards, while in the case of earthing systems, old technologies have become obsolete further maintenance free earthing systems using solid rod technology surrounded by earth enhancement compound is recommended now.

    2. Installation of Devices for Safety From Arc Faults: The arc fault condition is basically the generation of an arc of electric current in a circuit. They tend to generate high-intensity heating at the spot of arcing, which is potentially very dangerous.

They can be tackled by incorporating arc fault circuit interrupters in the electric network, ensuring the safety of the entire circuit from both parallel and series arcs.

    3. Protection Devices for Arc Flashes: Arc flashes are frequent fault occurrences that happen to occur 6-7 times every day. Arc flash is the release of high energy bolts and gives off intense heat, for which the best defence technique is to install devices that can efficiently provide ultra-fast detection and reduce the arc energy release.

    4. Reduce Risk With Concrete Thermal Monitoring Technology: Utilizing IR thermography inspection and carrying out frequent inspections can detect thermal anomalies and faults in electric equipment.

This approach is a non-destructive and non-contact technology for recording heat signature, which can detect changes in the thermal runaway of devices with age.

    5. Regular Predictive Maintenance for the Electric Network: Aging and poorly maintained electric switches, sockets, protection installations or other devices are likely to fail in the long run.

Continued monitoring of the temperature conditions or electric overloading can effectively reduce the risk of electrocution, fire hazard or equipment failure.

    6. Have Properly Designed External and Internal Surge Protection Installed: Power surges are issues of modern and sophisticated devices which can be induced from sources such as - direct lightning surges, indirect lightning surges, switching activity, electromagnetic induction, etc., for which the solution recommended is to install lightning and surge protection system designed and installed by a qualified electric service provider.
