In simplest term, 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one url to another url. For example if you have a domain xyz.com and you want to take all authorship of this domain to new domain abc.com, then you need to use 301 redirect for old domain.

HTTP status code 301 means that you are telling Google or other webpage visitor that the webpage is no longer there and they should update their links to a new page. Visitor is also redirected to a new page.
