What is the definition of keyword?

Webite owners or SEO workers want the website to appear in search engine (Google) when they type certain keyword. Example: cooking
So they change website contents the way this keyword/word appears there.

I think the keyword is used by SEO people when they talking about a word on which they try to improve website ranking in Google.
