Canonical URL link basically used to avoid duplicate content & is inserted in non-visible header area of an HTML document. The Canonical URL links are usually used to define the homepage.

Hello,
A canonical URL is a your preferred URL. Still not making sense? We understand, so let us explain. URLs can have multiple variables and as such, to avoid issues like duplicate content, Google asks that the webmaster chooses one to use.
Ok ,the paths of your product and general site content pages are usually constructed in the following fashion:
w w w. example . com/ product1.html
However, sometimes there may be alternate versions of your page URLs that can be listed on search engines - even though they ultimately go to the same page.
Situations such as affiliate, session or conversion tracking script paramters as well as an alternate domain presence may change your URL slightly. For example:
w w w . example . com / product1 . html?script-id=2323&script2-id4323&etc_id32
In the above two examples, both URLs essentially go to the same page. However search engine spiders may not realize this. Therefore, you may not always have control as to which URL is represented on your search engine results. Furthermore, some search engines - most notably Google - may flag situations like the above as possible "duplicate content" which may indirectly hurt your rankings.
So by using Canonical URL feature, you can effectively add the absolute URL that will always be used on your pages when they are listed on search engines.
Thank You.

Canonical URL tag attribute is similar in many ways to a 301 redirect from an SEO perspective. Canonical URL is the search engines friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a Canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see.

Canonicalization is the process of picking the best URL (to present to the search engines) when there are multiple choices available.

Canonicalization is used to avoid duplicate content issues on the website. Suppose you have page A and Page B with same content but different urls. If you want google to consider Page A as the main version of the page, then you will have to place canonical tag in page B to tell google that your priority page is A.
