Jackal are mostly considered animals of opportunity. This means we often come across them and most farmers consider them vermin and request us to shoot them on sight. These characters are not too unlike the NA coyotes. The body size of a jackal is slightly smaller than that of a coyote but in the end they are liable for the same amount of stock damage if allowed to breed uncontrolled. Jackal can be called with a predator caller but will only be fooled once.

There are mainly two species of which the black-backed jackal is most common and found throughout South Africa. The side-striped jackal occurs mostly in the northern reaches of Namibia, Botswana, and parts of Zambia. The black-backed is light reddish in color. He sports a saddle of black on his back, accented with white speckles, and thus his title. The only notable difference between the male and female is that males will tend to be slightly heavier.

While the jackal prefers open, arid areas such as woodlands or grasslands with enough brush for cover, this canine can adapt to just about any habitat. He is independent of water and usually solitary, although they do live in pairs and establish territories. They scavenge carcasses and feed on lambs, mice, hares, larger insects and fruit. Hunting jackal (http://ekujasafari.com/hunting-jackal-namibia/) is usually the product of a chance encounter while on the track of other game.

The best caliber for hunting jackal in Namibia (http://ekujasafari.com/hunting-jackal-namibia/) would be a medium bore rifle that you can shoot accurately and feel comfortable using. There are numerous calibers out there that will be able to effectively hunt jackal with and we wish not to get involved in debating on the merits of each.

Hunting jackal at night with a spotlight is mostly how it is done. Early in the mornings and late in the afternoons is when you can expect to come across the jackal in open areas, either on its way home, or going out to hunt. If a rifle is handy one is certain to get a shot at it. Predator calling only works until the jackal realizes they have been fooled; hereafter it will take some time before they respond to predator callers.
