I think that hyperlinks with nofollow attribute are safe. I do not afraid being penalized by google for placing links to various places.
I can freely promote and increase site traffic.
Nofollow links should not hurt SEO, but also not improve it.

If you have no no-follow links you will have an unnatural link profile, as everyone else has been saying make sure its from highly relevant traffic sources.
