I think one should use text or image links, not full flash content and not texts in images.
then correctly name/title articles, highlight important parts in articles in bold font, proper paragraphs and possibly original image too.. then offcourse very quality backlinks from various ontopic sources built "organic" slow way not build in bulk by purpose.

You just need to follow the guidlines of that search engine. if we talk about Googlw, it gives priority to website which believe in sharing informative content with their users.
