In Google Webmaster Tools, im usually reminded by Google that i do not have robots file. So i think this robots.txt is important to be there and personally i would not care about meta tags.

Robots.txt is much better as it lists the webpages together in a single list. It is a text file that lists webpages which contain instructions for search engines robots. The file lists webpages that are allowed and disallowed from search engine crawling.

In order to exclude individual pages from search engine indices, the noindex meta tag is actually superior to robots.txt. ... You want to use 'noindex, follow' in a robots meta tag, rather than robots.txt , because it will allow the link juice to pass through. It is better from a SEO perspective.

    Robots.txt is most preferred option.
